What Are Grandmas For?

Grandmas are for stories
about things of long ago.
Grandmas are for caring.
about all the things you know….
Grandmas are for rocking you.
and singing you to sleep..
Grandmas are for giving you.
nice memories to keep….
Grandmas are for knowing.
all the things you’re dreaming of….
But, most importantly of all,.
Grandmas are for love.

I ran across this sweet little poem about Grandmothers looking for something for a friend online. Paula, who I have written about before from Rosehaven in Lexington, Kentucky is a first time Grandmother! Her cute little grandson was born yesterday. She asked me if I could make a blanket for him with a Rocking Horse on it. I found an old Butterick pattern online and purchased it. Yesterday I was at the fabric store sorting through the complicated pattern instructions and picking colors to go with the baby’s room decor. I called to chat with her about my decisions, only to learn little Charlie had arrived! No pressure.

So, the sweater I’ve been knitting for Hudson, and a scarf I have yarn for to weave, will go on the back burner as I get this going today!

It has a lot of hand quilting, which I actually enjoy, though its been years since I’ve done hand quilting, a dying art. I have a lovely quilting frame on a stand for just such a project that I have not had the occasion to use. So I’m excited about that.

Anyway, Grandmothers, and indeed Grandparents, are incredibly special in the lives of children. Certainly mine were to me and my children were incredibly blessed to have known well, SIX of their GREAT-Grandparents! How cool is that!

I miss mine terribly, as they were such an integral part of my life. They knew all my nonsense growing up and their answer to all of it was to hug me and love me.

When I was in Little Rock with Dave, I met many “grandparents” going through treatment. Still the prevailing age group of Myeloma patients is over 60. It was always joyful to watch them come out of their emotional situation to chat about their grandchildren who they were immensely proud of. It was always a great entry point of conversation. Any grandkids? Grandchildren bring such joy and many make better grandparents than parents, just because they can play with them and spoil them. And some get immense joy watching their troublesome children go through the trials of raising their own kids! I know my own mother could be caught smirking from time to time!

My “southern” relatives told me years ago, with HEAVY drawl –

“Don’t you know dawlin? You have to grow up, get married, have children and PAY FOR YOUR RAISIN’!”

I paid! I paid! haha
